Their 99-92 victory in New Jersey gave them the feeling that the next three months might not be so bad after all. Those teams will play once again, this time at The Palace, on Friday.
"Everybody's giving more effort the whole game and we're not having as many lapses as we had before," center Greg Monroe said.

| ROSTER REPORT | PLAYER NOTES:
--C Greg Monroe achieved his eighth double-double in the last nine games with 20 points and 12 rebounds against New Jersey Wednesday. Monroe did it all from the field, going 10-of-16. He made the Pistons bench erupt late in the game with a rare throw-down over Nets forward Kris Humphries.
"I think everybody is starting to get a little more intense," he said. "That's another difference why we're playing better."
--G Ben Gordon returned after missing 10 games with a sore left shoulder and didn't show any rust with his shot, going 6-of-7 from the field while scoring 14 points in 21 minutes off the bench. With Gordon backing up Rodney Stuckey, Damien Wilkins dropped out of the rotation.
"It was fun," Gordon said. "I hate missing games, especially in a shortened season. It was good to get out there and help my team get a victory."
--F Jonas Jerebko continued his offensive surge with 16 points, his fifth double-digit performance in the last six games. He added seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks without a turnover in 35 minutes. Jerebko has settled into his role as the main frontcourt player off the bench, allowing coach Lawrence Frank to play mainly a three-man rotation at the power spots.

| | NOTES, QUOTES | --Center Greg Monroe and point guard Brandon Knight have been selected for the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday, Feb. 24, in Orlando during All-Star weekend.
Monroe, who leads the team in scoring and rebounding, was a member of the Rookie Team during last year's event at the All-Star game. Knight is the second-highest scoring rookie this season behind Cleveland's Kyrie Irving.
The participants in the Rising Stars Challenge were selected by the NBA's assistant coaches. For the first time, rookies and sophomores will be mixed together on teams. TNT analysts Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal will serve as the general managers of the two teams, each with nine-man rosters. Barkley and O'Neal will draft their teams on Thursday, Feb. 16.
--Pistons fans got used to seeing Richard Hamilton wear a mask in recent seasons. Knight is the current masked man, courtesy of an elbow by New Orleans' DaJuan Summers, that broke his nose Saturday.
Knight played 37 minutes Wednesday and had 13 points, four assists and four turnovers against the Nets while adjusting to his new look.
"You know me, I'm not going to complain about anything," he said. "It's a little bit uncomfortable but I'll get used to it. Of course, I noticed it because it got hot and sticky on my face, but I ended up getting used to it."
QUOTE TO NOTE: "If we scored 120 points, there would be a parade."
-- Pistons coach Lawrence Frank, whose team has not reached 100 points in regulation this season.

| | GETTING INSIDE | When the Pistons lost at New Jersey last week, their record was 4-20 and some people wondered if they could reach 10 wins this season.
Following the rematch Wednesday, some of the cynicism regarding the team has died down. A three-game winning streak might seem modest for many teams, but for the Pistons, it's a welcome relief from the steady stream of misery they endured during the first 5-1/2 weeks of the season.
"We've just got to continue to play like this and we'll continue to get wins."
Coach Lawrence Frank believes his team has established a blueprint for victory. If they can sustain their defensive intensity, win the rebounding battle and keep their turnovers down, they can sometimes overcome their lack of offensive punch and need for a star player.
They're also showing more resiliency, as they did Wednesday when the Nets made a fourth-quarter charge to nearly erase an 18-point deficit.
"When we've had struggles in games like this, where they go on a barrage of threes, sometimes we start to expect the worst to happen," Frank said. "Now, we're gaining more confidence in each other and in what we do and finding a way to dig a little deeper."
That's what they failed to do on Jan. 25, when they lost a late three-point lead to Miami, and Jan. 27, when they couldn't hold a six-point lead in the final minute against Atlanta. Playing lesser opponents has helped, with the other wins during the streak coming at home against mediocre Milwaukee and wayward New Orleans. So has improved chemistry.
"The spirit for our team over the last three games, you see a unified effort from everyone, whether you're playing or not playing," Frank said.

| | Pistons 99, Nets 92 | The Detroit Pistons aren't seeing the light at the end of the
tunnel. They're just feeling better about themselves while riding
their longest winning streak of the season and getting some key
players back on the floor.

| | ROSTER REPORT | PLAYER NOTES:
--C Greg Monroe continues to pile up the double-doubles. He had his seventh in the last eight games with 24 points and 16 rebounds Saturday against New Orleans, including a pivotal put-back that ended a 9-0 Hornets run. The rebounding total tied his season high. He's now averaging a team-high 16.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game.
--F Jason Maxiell had another strong outing while making his third consecutive start at power forward. He had 10 points, four offensive rebounds and two assists against the Hornets. He made two dunks in the late going, including a put-back that gave the Pistons a five-point lead in the final minute. That followed his eight-point, 12-rebound effort against Milwaukee Friday night.
--F Jonas Jerebko had 11 points against the Hornets, his fourth double-digit performance in the last five games. He's averaging 11.2 points per game during that stretch, boosting his season average to 9.4. His bench production is much needed since Austin Daye has struggled with his shooting all season and Damien Wilkins and Ben Wallace are not scoring threats.
MEDICAL WATCH:
--F Charlie Villanueva (right ankle soreness) has missed the last 18 games and is out indefinitely.
--G Will Bynum (sprained right foot) has missed 14 consecutive games and is questionable to play against New Jersey Wednesday.
--G Ben Gordon (sore left shoulder) has missed the last 10 games and is doubtful Wednesday.
--G Brandon Knight (broken nose) was injured in Saturday's game against New Orleans and is probable Wednesday.

| | NOTES, QUOTES | --Finally, the Pistons catch a break. After not having more than one day off, they get a three-day break before playing at New Jersey Wednesday. The 26 games they played through Saturday tied the league high.
"For us, we look at it as practice time," coach Lawrence Frank said. "We've got a lot of work to do."
Frank won't take any days off but the players will get a break Sunday before returning to practice Monday and Tuesday.
"Any day they don't have to hear me is a positive for them," he said with a smile. "This is an atypical season where there's a lot of craziness. This will be a healthy thing."
--The Pistons have excelled in one area this season: free throw shooting. They rank fifth in that category at 77.9 percent. They have six players shooting at least 78 percent, led by forward Austin Daye (90.0), guards Rodney Stuckey (86.0) and Ben Gordon (81.1) and center Greg Monroe (81.7).
Unfortunately, they have also been fouling the other teams' best free throw shooters far too often. Opponents are shooting 78.3 percent.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I was playing freely. Guys were telling me, 'Hey, Walk, it's your show, your keys now.' I can appreciate that and it boosted my confidence even more." -- Pistons rookie guard Walker Russell Jr., who played 33 minutes in place of injured Brandon Knight Saturday.

| | GETTING INSIDE | Brandon Knight impressed his coaches and teammates in recent days with his mental toughness. In the coming weeks, he'll get a chance to prove how well he can perform after a physical setback.
The Pistons' prized rookie point guard suffered a broken nose during the first quarter of Detroit's 89-87 victory over New Orleans Saturday. Coach Lawrence Frank is optimistic Knight can play Wednesday at New Jersey.
"They'll have to reset it and get him fit for a mask," Frank said. "Hopefully by Tuesday, we'll have him back to practice. Give him unbelievable credit. He gets his nose broken and he's begging to get back in the game but we couldn't do it."
Knight shrugged off adversity earlier in the week after he played his worst game of the season against Milwaukee and potential All-Star Brandon Jennings Monday. He went scoreless in 24 minutes while committing four turnovers as Jennings led the Bucks to a 103-82 rout.
That experience could have gotten into Knight's head but he had no trouble erasing the memory of that game. He outplayed Jennings in a rematch four nights later by scoring a season-high 26 points as the Pistons snapped a seven-game losing streak.
"He doesn't get too high after wins or get too low after losses. He's a pretty grounded person and you can tell by the way he plays," center Ben Wallace said. "(Friday) he didn't play like a rookie. He came out and played like he's been playing this game all his life. If he just keeps doing what everybody asks him to do, the sky's the limit for him."
Knight has been everything the Pistons hoped for when they took him with the No. 8 pick in the draft. He's not only supremely talented, he's got the work ethic and tenacity to develop into one of the league's top players at his position. His 12.5 points per game rank second among first-year players behind only Cleveland's Kyrie Irving, the top pick. He's also playing 32.0 minutes per game, second among rookies to Minnesota's Ricky Rubio, yet hasn't shown any signs of hitting the rookie wall.
"I don't really pay much attention to walls," he said. "I just feel you find a way to become energetic and fight through the adversity and fatigue. What a lot of people say about the rookie wall is that basically when you get fatigued, your body goes into shock. You haven't played this many games, as a rookie, ever in your life. I just try to find a way through treatment and warming up hard to stay in the game. My teammates talk me through that and push me along."
For the time being, he'll have to push through the pain of a busted nose.
"He's breathing fine but his nose is a little crooked," center Greg Monroe said. "I'm looking forward to seeing the mask."
